How to create emergency startup disk?

Tuesday, 11 August 2009 21:30 by Justin

initial Problem:

It is very essential that you always have a booting disk (Startup disk or emergency disk) ready. If for some reasons you cannot boot your computer then this startup disk will come in handy.
It is very easy to create a booting disk. All that is required is a blank floppy disk and then give the right command.

Solution:

If you have Norton utility or similar software product then it is very easy to create a booting disk.

If you do not have such utilities do not worry. You can use the 'Create an MS-DOS startup disk' option to create the booting disk.

Steps to create a startup / emergency / booting disk

  • Insert a floppy disk into your computer's floppy drive.
  • Open My Computer, and then click the floppy disk drive to select it.
  • On the File menu, point to the name of the floppy drive, and then click Format.
  • Under Format options, click .
  • Click Start.

Important

Creating an MS-DOS startup disk erases all information on the floppy disk.

* To open My Computer, click Start, and then click My Computer.

How to use the startup disk?

  • Insert the startup disk into the floppy drive and start the computer.
  • After the Power On Selft Test (POST) finishes, click the 'delete' button and enter into BIOS settings. In BIOS click on 'Advanced' and change the 'booting sequence'. Change the booting sequence to A: as the first option.
  • In a while you will get a black MS DOS window with the A:> prompt.
  • Now give the C: command and change the current drive to C drive.
  • Now the prompt will change from A:> to C:>
  • Now give the scandisk c: command and scan your hard disk for errors.
  • If you cannot find the problem, then stop the computer and remove the start up disk from the floppy.
  • Insert a bootable Anti Virus CD into the CD Drive and start the computer, so that the Antivirus software can rectify the problem.
  • If you still have a problem then contact your support engineer for help
