How to Always Run an Application as Administrator in Windows 7

Tuesday, 29 June 2010 19:49 by michael

To run an application as an Administrator you can right click on its shortcut or main executable file, and then select "Run as Administrator" option. However, doing this can be quiet annoying if you use this application very often. This article describes how to simplify that process.

Let's consider an example,

choose trusted application, i.e. its executable file:

Choose the application_1.png

Right click on it and choose Properties, go to Compatibility tab and check the check-box "Run this program as an Administrator", click O.k. to accept changes.

How to Fix Svchost.exe Using 100% CPU

Monday, 28 June 2010 10:00 by michael

When pressing <CTRL>+<ALT>+<DEL> you can find out that svchost.exe process is using up maximum CPU resources and only occurs when Automatic Updates is enabled. Microsoft has recognized this problem and has released a patch. But this patch doesn't guarantee that this problem will be solved.

Open Task Manager and go to "Processes" tab and then press "Mem Usage". If you have this svchost.exe memory leak bug after about 1 minute you will see that the amount of memory usage svchost.exe uses will keep increasing until CPU becomes 99 or 100%.

Get quick access to Office documents with Outlook 2010 Jumplists

Monday, 28 June 2010 09:31 by Jim

Windows 7 Jumplists are right-click menus or contextual menus in the Windows taskbar that make it easier to find the files and operations you need. If you have a program open, a Jump List will appear in the taskbar.

You can also pin programs to the taskbar so that their Jump Lists are always available. If the currently used program is pinned to the Start Menu, then the Jump Lists will appear from the Start Menu. As you click on the arrow beside the program at the Start Menu, the Jump Lists will pop up.

1_1_1_1_1_1_1_1_1_1_1_1_1_1_1_1.png

With Office 2010 Jumplists, you can have a quick access to Word documents, Excel worksheets or other Office 2010 files. Office 2010 Jump Lists are the menu options that pop up when users right-click on any icon in the taskbar. These Jump Lists help jump to programs that users are recently working on. These files are currently pinned programs to the task bar.

2_1_1_1_1_1_1_1_1_1.png

However, Outlook 2010 makes use of Windows 7’s Jumplists feature for quick access to certain processes which include actions to create a new email, appointment, meeting, contact, or task directly from the Outlook 2010 Jump List.

3_1_1_1_1_1_1_1_1.png

So, with Outlook 2010 you don’t have to open Outlook to perform these operations and can use a few clicks to perform an operation and for quick access to certain processes.

How to Speed Up Mozilla Firefox Browser

Monday, 28 June 2010 08:18 by michael

The more faster the internet speed is, the more comfortable your web-browsing is. But sometimes there can be significant slowdown due to improperly configured browser, even if you have fast internet package. Supposing that Mozilla FireFox is used for browsing, certain changes can be made to improve the performance.

How to Speed Up Mozilla FireFox Browser:

1. Launch Mozilla FF. In the address bar type in: "about:config" without quotation marks and press Enter. Scroll down and look for the following entries.

network.http.pipelining

network.http.proxy.pipelining

network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

2. Normally the browser will make one request to a site at a time. When enebling pipelining it will make several at once, which really gives good results.

3. Alter the entries as follows:

Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining"  to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like "40-60"  which indicates the number of requests.

Mozilla FF.PNG

4. The last thing to do is to right-click anywhere and select New > Integer. Name "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set it to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

Error while downloading files in Firefox: "Source file could not be read"

Sunday, 27 June 2010 15:20 by Alexandr.Skripnik

When attempting to download and save a file in the browser, you may see an error message similar to the following:

File could not be saved, because the source file could not be read. Try again later, or contact the server administrator.

This error can occur if the connection to the server was interrupted during the download. Make sure you are connected to the internet, then try the download again. If the problem persists, try these other solutions:

This error can occur after pausing and then resuming a download. Try downloading large files in a single step, without pausing. (It is possible that your security software is scanning and locking the file, which may still be in the system temporary folder after you pause the download. If Firefox can't access the file then resuming the download will fail.)

If you are using a Firefox extension to manage your downloads, try disabling the extension via "Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions".

Another possible solution is to close Firefox completely and delete the "compreg.dat" file from the Firefox profile folder (for Windows Vista or 7: In the "Start Search" or "Search programs and files" box, type in:  %APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles).

How to clean up Live Essentials

Saturday, 26 June 2010 18:26 by Alexandr.Skripnik

How to clean up Live Essentials

Installing Windows Live Essentials will get you the new versions of Mail, Movie Maker, Photo Gallery and others - great. Unfortunately it also includes other components that may be unnecessary, but if you like to keep a clean system then these can be quickly removed.

If you left the default "Set your search provider" option selected during installation, for instance, Windows Live will install Choice Guard, a tool to set your browser home page and search engine, and prevent other programs from changing them. If this causes problems later, or you just decide you don't need it, then Choice Guard may be removed by clicking Start, typing msiexec /x and pressing [Enter].

Windows Live Essentials also adds an ActiveX Control to help upload your files to Windows Live SkyDrive, as well as the Windows Live Sign-in Assistant, which makes it easier to manage and switch between multiple Windows Live accounts. If you're sure you'll never need either then remove them with the Control Panel "Uninstall a Program" applet.

Delete a table without losing the data or table formatting (Excel 2010)

Saturday, 26 June 2010 08:49 by Alexandr.Skripnik

After you create a table in Microsoft Office Excel, you might not want to keep working with the table functionality that it includes. Or you might want a table style without the table functionality. To stop working with your data in a table without losing any table style formatting that you applied, you can convert the table to a regular range of data on the worksheet.

 1.GIF

 1. Click anywhere in the table.

Tip This displays the Table Tools, adding the Design tab. A cell in the table must be selected for the Design tab to be visible.

 2. On the Design tab, in the Tools group, click Convert to Range.

 2.GIF

Table features are no longer available after you convert the table back to a range. For example, the row headers no longer include the sort and filter arrows, and structured references (references that use table names) that were used in formulas turn into regular cell references.
